Progress report part 2A.ai - NEPP - North European Energy

Norway CCS reports Sharing knowledge and outcomes from Longship and earlier CCS projects with the rest of the world is of huge importance for Norwegian authorities. We hope sharing our experiences and studies will help you to address the CCS issue in your industry and in your country. However, Greenpeace says the collapse of CCS projects overseas and in Australia shows the technology is commercially unviable. Julian Vincent of Greenpeace says governments are paying an unfair share of the research bill because the coal power industry is unwilling to invest. Greenpeace has previously been firmly opposed to CCS technologies as part of the solution to the climate challenge.

“We are, however, not standing in the way of using CCS to capture pollution from hard to decarbonize sectors like cement manufacturing,” The Greenpeace report argues that CSC technology not only wastes energy, its wide-scale application would erase efficiency gains and increase resource consumption. Rochon says that its expense could also lead to a doubling of plant costs, and electricity price increases to the consumer of between 21-91%. A UN report predicts that CCS won't be able to play any significant role for decades, and the bulk of its deployment would take place in the second half of this century - and even then only if the appropriate subsidy mechanisms and policy drivers are put in place. Greenpeace disagrees, arguing in a report titled ‘False Hope’ that CCS is commercially and technically unproven. Consequently, it will be too late to prevent dangerous climate change. Just 1% of fossil fuel power plants will be CCS-equipped by 2035, predicts the IEA. Greenpeace released a report in May 2008 entitled “False Hope,” in which it contends that CCS wastes energy, creates unacceptable risks of leakage, is too expensive, undermines funding for more sustainable solutions to potential climate change, carries significant liability risks, and cannot be implemented in time to avoid dangerous climate change. The new 364-page Greenpeace scenario (GPER)1 portrays a world that is dominated by solar and wind by 2030 and even more so by 2050.

PEFC notes the concerns voiced by Greenpeace in a recent report, namely that ‘[c]ertification on its own has not helped companies meet their 2020 commitments to exclude deforestation from their supply chains’ and cautions that certification was never designed – and never claimed – to do so on its own.

To put an end to plastic pollution, we need to eliminate single-use plastics. This is why Greenpeace is calling on retailers and the Government to set firm targets to at least halve usage of single-use plastics in supermarkets by 2025.
